Psychologist

Carol is a Psychologist with an honours degree in Psychology from Dublin City University and a Master’s degree in Health Psychology (Behavioural Medicine) from the University of Ulster.

My psychotherapeutic approach is rooted in four core psychological principles that support healing, growth, and the development of a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

Firstly, I am influenced by the work of psychologist Martin Seligman, of Positive Psychology and the concept of learned helplessness, how suffering often arises when we feel powerless or believe we have little control over our lives. I believe we can flourish in life when we cultivate learned optimism; our capacity to create hope, resilience, meaning and direction in our lives, creating a greater sense of wellbeing.

Secondly, I draw upon the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which recognises the close relationship between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. The beliefs we hold about ourselves and the world can profoundly influence how we experience life. By identifying and gently challenging self-limiting thoughts and patterns, we can create positive and lasting change.

The work of psychologist Carl Rogers also resonates deeply with me. His concept of unconditional positive self regard reflects my belief that healing begins with self-compassion. I strive to offer a warm, accepting, and non-judgemental therapeutic relationship in which clients feel safe, understood, and valued.

Finally, I believe that many of us carry roles, expectations, and masks that have been shaped by our experiences and by the messages we have received from others. Therapy provides an opportunity to recognise these patterns, let go of what no longer serves us, and reconnect with our authentic selves.

Through greater self-awareness and self-acceptance, we can begin to live with more freedom, self compassion, and a deeper sense of connection to ourselves and others.

When we achieve this, we can flourish in all aspects of our lives.
